Posting here as this is very good information.

I regularly see posts about sick/injured foxes that are full of comments telling the op to pick up the fox and take it to the vet. Just yesterday I saw a post where someone was asking if an inured fox they’d found would bite them if they picked it up. Never touch a sick or injured wild animal. It doesn’t matter how docile or out of it they may appear, they can switch in a second and seriously injure you. Always call someone like a wildlife rescue, RSPCA or animal control who have the experience and equipment to handle that animal safely.

Someone walked into our reception with a badger wrapped in a coat once (badger very much alive and relatively well) and I have never seen so many people immediately freak out in fear for a person’s wellbeing.

Please never just pick up a wild or feral animal and attempt to carry it!

brunhiddensmusings

me at a museum- (gazing at a random item of mundane life) what was the name of the person who made you? what songs did they sing? what jokes did they tell? what was their favorite food? did they ever marry their sweetheart? who remembered them when they died?

OH LOOK AT THAT THE 1960S

AND SHE’S IN COMMAND GOLD FUCKERS.

She’s not in Medical blue, a caretaking, feminine role.

Those in Gold were either OFFICERS, NAVIGATORS, PILOTS, TACTICAL OFFICERS, or WEAPONS SPECIALISTS.

This is the Kirk everyone likes to forget.

Y’all, if you care about feminism, then you ought to care about the history and context of the miniskirt. The 60s were an era of rebellion against the 50s, and the skirts were part of it. They were literally cutting edge fashion, and a statement that women made against the more housewifey style of skirt from the decade before. It was Grace Lee Whitney herself who suggested to Roddenberry that they wear them, and Nichelle Nichols has said she never had a problem with them. They are a product of their time yes, but the women chose to wear them because of the context of that time.

Also some men in Starfleet ware miniskirts and dresses:

And some of the women wear pants:

They’re given the power of choice, regardless of gender or sex.

Picard in that dress is so good. Look at him! He looks formal and serious and dignified! He looks like he’s captain of his ship and he’s got some important business to do. And he’s in a dress and tights. And it’s not a joke. It’s not a joke about a man in a dress! It’s just, you know, a man who is wearing a dress, and that’s normal and appropriate. It’s part of the uniform. It fits him. It’s totally unremarkable and that is so rare and I’m so happy.

absynthe--minded

I feel obligated to point out that this is Picard’s literal dress uniform (his Extra Special Fancy Uniform), and he hated his dress uniform? But he hated it because the collar was uncomfortable, not because it was A Dress. There’s zero commentary on how it’s A Dress and a lot of bitching about its lack of comfort.

It's... pretty blatant?

ayeforscotland

It really is. Here’s Jon Stewart talking about how it somehow gets a free pass.

it's so fucked up. i remember reading the books expecting there to be a turn in the story, that house elves and goblins would be freed from wizard tyranny, i expected the story to culminate in some sort of a cultural revolution. we got to the part where harry buried dobby, and griphook felt touched that harry showed such respect to a creature that most wizards looked down on so he helped them in turn - and then betrayed them at his earliest convenience and it was all done out of greed. well fuck that shit. literally nothing changed. they killed voldemort and for what? they didn't put a stop to the ideals that sustained his influence! everyone stayed just as racist and classist as they were before and i read 7 books about the necessity of changing the status quo only for the protagonists to become the status quo in the end with a myriad of social issues never addressed.

it had a really good opportunity for a nice story but it remained unaware of its own themes (unless it was purposefully racist which i wouldn't presume) and for that it fell flat and we're left with a story that could have been about racism/classism from the nonracist/nonclassist perspective of the yet uncorrupted youth but what we got was plain old racism and classism with the not-as-subtle-as-we-thought hint of homophobia and transphobia.

ayeforscotland

Despite coming from one of the worst places on the internet, I always thought this was pretty good analysis of how nothing really changes in the wizarding world because Harry is born from an author who rigidly clings to the status quo rather than the betterment of society.

I think an underrated horror trope is “insular christian cult worshipping something that slowly reveals itself to be Very Much Not God”.  I think it speaks something to the bastardized nature of american christian sects like southern baptist and others. I think in a lot of ways the way colonialism pairs with christianity in the americas really makes it demonic in ways that horror makes powerful statements about.

hellyesbro

“There is no god in this church. Nothing but an empty box built on atrocities. You think the christian God watches over America? God did not come with us to this land.”

quasi-normalcy

I like the idea of a horror story set in a world built around Discworld/ American Gods rules, where belief literally makes gods real, and one of those sects accidentally creates the God that they’re *actually* worshipping, rather than the one that they *think* that they’re worshipping; and He’s callous and cruel and petty and bloodthirsty because His followers are callous and cruel and petty and bloodthirsty, and they’ve basically been worshipping themselves all along.

[image description: a bullet-pointed list of white text on a red background. the list is titled, “Helpful Phrases at the Doctor’s Office,” and the bullet points say:

  • Show me a study where the majority of subjects succeeded at the amount of weight loss you are suggesting.
  • Do thin people get this health problem? What do you recommend for them?
  • Due to a low rate of success and serious irreversible side effects, including death, weight loss surgery is not an option.
  • The research I’ve seen shows that the vast majority of people who attempt weight loss fail, and many actually gain weight long term.
  • Please provide me with evidence-based medicine and the opportunity for informed consent.
  • Shame is bad for my health. I would ask you to first do no harm, and provide me with shame-free healthcare.
  • In our limited time, I’d like to focus on [what I came in for.]
